1. Must-see château’s
Château de Beloeil is one of the most beautiful château’s in the region.
From the Middle Ages up until the 18th century, southern Belgium was a patchwork of principalities, duchies and earldoms, each of which had its own chateau. These days, many of these fantastic properties have been restored to their former glory and can now be visited or stayed in.
One particular Château we know that is worth a visit is Château de Beloeil, which is surrounded by a 25-hectare park. This vast residence was home to the Princes de Ligne (Belgian nobility) since the 14th century. Every room is lavishly decorated with antique furniture and come spring, the grounds are transformed with stunning floral displays for the Château’s annual Amaryllis Festival. Perfect for a romantic weekend away.
2. Relaxing in nature

Wallonia is blessed with some of the most beautiful natural sights in the country. Including the enchanting landscapes of the Ardennes, the Meuse Valley and fantastic health spas, meaning you can both explore the great outdoors and rejuvenate on your trip away.
The town of Spa in Wallonia is the original spa, after which all the others are named, and has been known worldwide for centuries as a place where people can take the waters and be cured of all ills.
A more recent addition is the luxurious health spa of Chaudfontaine, which has been built around a natural spring that is found just outside the city of Liège. Spend a week or just a few days here, and you’re sure to emerge a totally new person.
3. Cultural Discovery
‘Ducasse de Mons’ pays tribute to the legendary battle of Saint George and the Dragon.
And, finally, there are plenty of great cultural attractions to enjoy in the region. We’ve already spoken about the where it all began in Belgium; the city of Tournai, the country’s oldest city. But with two UNESCO sites and a defensive tower built on the instructions of Henry VIII, it’s worth another mention.
Not far from Tournai (around 50km) is the small town of Mons, which packs in vast history and was declared the European Capital of Culture in 2015. Home to the fascinating Doudou Museum, where all history and rituals of the town’s ‘Ducasse de Mons’ (UNESCO recognised) is explained. If you time your visit to Wallonia just right you can witness this unique town event.
Orval Abbey is also home to one of the six Belgian Trappist brewery’s.
Another trail well worth treading is the beer route through Wallonia, which is where three (Rochefort, Chimay and Orval) of the world’s six Trappist beers are produced. The food in southern Belgium is also worth a visit in its own right: think Ardennes pate, rich game dishes and creamy chocolates, and you will have just a small inkling of what lies in store.
